Who is more important?

November 26, 2016

Who is more important, a king or a peasant? Who is more important, a leader or a follower? Who is more important, a man or a woman? Who is more important, an adult or a child?

The President of the United States is protected by a cadre of highly trained Secret Service Agents, is covered incessantly by television and print media worldwide, and leads a staff of the most highly influential people on the planet. So, who is more important, the President of the United States or the People of the United States? To help answer that question, try looking at the United States with a President or People, but not both. If you remove the People such that you have only the President, how important is the President? If you remove the President such that you have only the People, how important are the People?

The principal of your local high school, if they are competent, will organize the school in such a way that it will function both efficiently and effectively so that students can learn all the things they need to learn to get through life. But, who is more important to the success of the school, the principal or the teachers? How about the teachers or the students? Where do the school’s maintenance engineers fit into the scale of importance? How about the cafeteria staff?

Would our country be better off if there were no garbage collectors or if there were no stockbrokers? If there were no doctors or if there were no lawyers? If there were no firemen or if there were no police?

Perhaps no one person is more important than any other person. Could that be true? What would happen to our world if any one person were removed from it? Would you trade 300 million people for one great leader? Think of these questions before you designate any person to be more important than any other person.
