Is the American system of justice just? For many years, I have doubted that it is. Now, I am absolutely certain that our system is not just (certainly not balanced or fair, two key ingredients of justice)!
Consider the following real-life scenario and decide for yourselves:
A teenage driver recently received their FIRST ever traffic ticket on an Interstate highway around 3:00 am with no passengers and no other cars on the road at the time. The only person in danger is the driver. The driver is ticketed by the State Police for driving 85 in a 65 zone. At the insistence of someone that works within the criminal "justice" system, the driver reluctantly agreed to plead NOT GUILTY in order to present the driver's circumstances (first offense, empty road, etc.) to the CT State's Attorney's Office in hopes of getting a punishment that would be more appropriate for a first-time offender under the circumstances of the offense. At the Court Hearing, the young Attorney (reportedly a Law Intern rather than an actual attorney) says that "today's special is a $100 reduction of the fine". The agreement being "offered" was for the driver to plead guilty to driving 85 in a 65 zone (the same as if the driver had mailed in the ticket with a guilty plea).
Do you know any first-time offenders that had their charges dismissed because it was their first offense?
Do you know any police officers or court officials or others that can speed and NEVER get ticketed because they carry a badge to uphold the law or know someone in the "Justice System"?
Do you know any multiple offenders that have never had to plead guilty to the actual offense for which they were charged?
Do you know a large number of people that drive above the posted speed limits on a daily basis, as a matter of routine, but don't get ticketed?
If you answered "Yes" to any of the above questions, then you must be able to hear the SCREAMS of INJUSTICE that seem to permeate our society today!!! It's time for Americans to stand up for what's right and not simply accept things as they are!
