Letter to Congressman Courtney Regarding Electricity

October 31, 2012

Congressman Courtney,

No hurricane is a trivial matter.  However, Connecticut has faced two hurricanes in a span of 15 months.  In both instances, the loss of electricity has spanned the entire state for an inordinate amount of time.  It is 2012!  I could understand these types of widespread outages in the 1950s, but I don't understand why they have to happen today!  Isn't it time we upgrade our power infrastructure?  We live in a country that relies heavily on technology and technology relies heavily on the uninterrupted availability of electricity.  How much unnecessary cost are we going to incur as a result of our infrastructure being incapable of withstanding 50 mph wind gusts.  If we had invested 18 months ago in simple and available technology to protect our infrastructure from such storms (underground conduits, wind shields for generators and transformers, etc.), we'd have already realized a huge return on investment.  It's time to move forward and give the residents of our state something to be proud of, isn't it?
